We leaned into our inner wisdom and the collective’s, to craft the tools and create the confidence to stop harassment as it happens. We have heard for years how women and gender non-conforming people do not feel safe, endure, and resist being the target of co-workers, managers and patrons in kitchens and salons of all sorts. Although society disenfranchises us the most, our own and shared experiences organized create the pathway for change. This series of workshops brought survivors together through laughs and tears. Together, in navigation heavy at times, we converted experiences of shame in collective synergy and pride. We hope this growing network of survivors reaches those who need now the support that only us could bring.
In our first session we focused on the first and most common form of harassment: the jokes and inappropriate comments that shame our bodies and identities. We grounded in consent and the red flags of harassment and escalation and what are the barriers we face daily to stand up for our ourselves. We practiced Assertive Communication and tackled the legal reporting structure inside the workplace.

In our second session we explored our identities into context and how intersectionality affects the power we have in our workplaces. Under the title: “What do we do when people look down on us?” we mapped our identities, privileges, and disadvantages. We spent time defining the differences between personality, and identifying microaggressions and their effect on our wellbeing. We hurt exploring why it is so difficult for us to respond to the patriarchal systemic context and the disadvantages that we have as immigrant women or LGBTQ+ in kitchens.

In our third session 3 we understood that the development of collective power is essential to stop harassment at work. In our workshop named “Creating bonds” we focused on tools such as the 5Ds of bystander intervention and described ways on how to create solidarity among survivors and even allies in the face of harassment. We organize to keep each other safe!

Racism and harassment are not our fault and there is so much to heal. In our last session of these series we centered on how we heal and care for ourselves and each other. Together, we used affirmations, visualizations and created a Care Plan. It is so important to identify who is in our network of support, what are the daily activities that help us maintain our emotional balance, and what are the affirmations that reconnect us with our own power to make consent be part of our life at work.

Our network of survivors grows every day in knowledge and numbers. We are in South Philly to stay. We know that WE run the kitchens in our city restaurants. Sharing our experiences in a safe space such as these workshops, has brought wisdom and power to our lives. We know that we are not alone and that our growth will make us unstoppable.

We are grateful to YES to consent! for listening and helping us materialize these workshops! And to all our sisters working in kitchens who fight every day to maintain their bodies and coworkers safe!
